Private Thayer was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863 and again at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5th, 1864. Private Thayer mustered out of the service in July of 1864.
He filed for a pension in 1890 and was a member of the Edward D. Baker Post No. 80 of the Grand Army of the Republic in Storm Lake Iowa.
