Private Sykes was wounded at the Battle of Brawner Farm on August 28th, 1862 and again on July 1st, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg. He was captured at the Battle of the Wilderness and eventually sent to the Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He was then sent to the rebel prison in Florence South Carolina where he was to be liberated.William died the day after he retuned home to Indiana.
