John Miller

Mustered into service as a Private August 9th, 1862

Died 02 March 1894

Buried Locust Hill Cemetery, Vanderburgh County Indiana

Private Miller was wounded severely in the face at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863.

By the fall of 1864 the ranks of the 19th Indiana were so depleted from combat casualties and sickness they were folded into the 20th Indiana Infantry. John was put into Company A of that regiment where he served until his muster out for disability on April 25th, 1865.

He filed for a pension in April of 1865.

The American Legion has him listed as being buried in the Soldiers Section of the Locust Hill Cemetery. His stone could not be located. At some point in time the cemetery replaced most to the headstones in this section and probably couldn't read many of them. The result is a high number of "U.S. Soldier" headstones. John has one of these markers.
