Private McConnell was discharged from the 19th Indiana early in the war because of disability. He enlisted as a Private in Company G of the 9th Indiana Cavalry on January 21st, 1864 and mustered out of the service on August 28th, 1865 in Indianapolis holding the rank of Corporal.
