Thomas Kirby was born in England and came to America in 1853 with his parents and siblings. He  rose in the ranks  from Corporal, Sergeant, 1st Sergeant and finally 1st Lieutenant when he mustered out in July of 1865. He was wounded at the Battle of South Mountain on September 14th, 1862. In the fall of 1864 he transferred to the 20th Indiana Infantry along with the other surviving members of the 19th.

He filed for a pension in March of 1887 but died three weeks later. His widow Ellen did receive a widows pensions starting later that year.
