Private Jelf was wounded at the Battle of South Mountain on September 14th, 1862 and would be discharged for disability that same year. On August 25th, 1863 he joined Battery B of the 5th U.S. Artillery serving there until his muster out on August 25th, 1868.
He filed for a pension in February of 1880.
