Private Henderson steadily rose in the ranks until he became a Captain in May of 1865. He was wound and captured at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863. On August 10th, 1863 he was parolled and returned to his regiment.In the fall of 1864 he transferred to the 20th Indiana with the other surviving members of the 19th Indiana.
He filed for and started to receive a pension in 1891.
