Private Dumond served with Battery B of the 4th U.S. Artillery from September 1862 to October of 1863. He then transferred to the 20th Indiana with the other surviving members of the 19th Indiana in the fall of 1864. David mustered out in July of 1865.
He was accidentally killed while working in the logging business in Wisconsin.
