Private Curtis was wounded in the hand at the Battle of Brawner Farm on August 28th, 1862, and in the left leg at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863.In the fall of 1864 he and the other surviving members of the 19th Indiana transfered to the 20th Indiana Infantry. By the time he mustered out of service in July of 1865 he had the rank of Sergeant.
He filed for and started to receive a pension in 1879.
