At age 42 James was one of the oldest men to join Company B in the summer of 1861. He was transferred to the 20th Indiana Infantry in the fall of 1864 along with the other surviving members of the 19th. He was one of the very few men from Company B that would muster out in July of 1865 having served from the beginning of the war in 1861.
