Private Backus was one of the few men in the 19th Indiana that would serve from 1861 to the end of the war in 1865. In the fall of 1864 he transferred to the 20th Indiana Infantry with the other surviving members of the 19th. In September of 1867 he enlisted in the 37th U.S. Infantry serving until his muster out in 1870 while in Kansas.
He died at the Dayton Soldiers Home in Dayton Ohio.
